Download Full Windows Essentials 2012 [offline] installer

image

The other day, it dawns on me that Microsoft has killed all their download links for Microsoft Windows Essentials 2012.

This was a slight problem because I was going to get my son started with doing some video editing with Windows Movie Maker 2012, but the download links were gone. Luckily, I keep a lot of the installers I download; that included the last full installer of Microsoft Windows Essentials 2012.

Of course this installer includes the Windows Live Writer, Windows Movie Maker, Microsoft OneDrive, Photo Gallery, Microsoft mail and (the now defunct) Messenger.

image

The installer allows you to choose the applications you want to install. Take note that if you want to install Windows Movie Maker, it comes with Photo Gallery. And Microsoft Mail is still better than what Microsoft released with Windows 10 for handling mail.

Photo Gallery is Microsoft Photo Gallery is still a good application; abandoned, but still good.

Windows Live Writer is closed down completely, and handed over to the Open Live Writer dev team. http://openlivewriter.org/ I mean it still works for some blog services, but not all. Windows Live Writer doesnt work with Blogger anymore. You have to use Open Live Writer for that now.

Microsoft OneDrive is in the installer, but its included with Windows 10 and the latest installer can be downloaded here: https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-us/download/

The install file is about 135Mb. If youve got a high-speed connection its no big deal.

Anyway, I hope this helps

Open Live Writer Server Error 501 using Blogger Service

Since the death of Windows Live Writer, the Open Live Writer dev team has given it a new life and  making small improvements over the past year. While there has been some improvements, the application is still has a lot of the old dependencies.

Take for an example, in a recent forum post an user posted an error with using the Blogger service; saying he was getting error 501.

The exact error was:

The remote server returned an error: (501) Not Implemented.

This is really a reminder that the images that you use on the Blogger service are all stored in the Google Photos service. And when you post images using the web GUI of Blogger, its a transparent function. When you use/used Windows Live Writer/Open Live Writer the images are stored in Google Photos, where a folder/album called Windows Live Writer has to be created.

So, if you are running into the same error, open https://photos.google.com/, create a new album called Windows Live Writer and then try to publish with Open Live Writer and you should be fine.

If you have multiple Google accounts, ensure you are doing this on the account you use with your Blogger account.

image

Creating a new album requires at least one image.

Some clarification needs to be made here.
This article says you need a Windows Live Writer folder with Google Photos, but you can also use Open Live Writer. For this article, I said Windows Live Writer because if you have used Windows Live Writer previously, you should have that folder, if not, you can establish an Open Live Writer folder for new installs.

For more information on Open Live Writer:

http://openlivewriter.org/

https://github.com/OpenLiveWriter/OpenLiveWriter/issues

If I can assist any more, just let me know

Update:
The Open Live Writer dev team confirms this is a result of the API change from Google. Open Live Writer cant create the Open Live Writer/Windows Live Writer folder automatically, so it has to be done manually. The instructions above apply and are now part of the tutorials from Open Live Writer https://github.com/OpenLiveWriter/OpenLiveWriter/commit/86a44c9.

Gmail Blocks JavaScript Attachments

If you try to send a JavaScript attachment using Gmail or if you want to download a .js attachment, you'll get a new anti-virus warning: "Blocked for security reasons", "1 attachment contains a virus or blocked file. Downloading this attachment is disabled".

.JS has been added to the long list of file types that are blocked by Gmail for security reasons. The full list: .ADE, .ADP, .BAT, .CHM, .CMD, .COM, .CPL, .EXE, .HTA, .INS, .ISP, .JAR, .JS (NEW), .JSE, .LIB, .LNK, .MDE, .MSC, .MSI, .MSP, .MST, .NSH .PIF, .SCR, .SCT, .SHB, .SYS, .VB, .VBE, .VBS, .VXD, .WSC, .WSF, .WSH. "To prevent against potential viruses, Gmail doesn't allow you to attach certain types of files, including: certain file types (listed above), including their compressed form (like .gz or .bz2 files) or when found within archives (like .zip or .tgz files), documents with malicious macros, archives whose listed file content is password protected, archives whose content includes a password protected archive."

The GSuite Blog informs that "for inbound mail, senders will get a bounce message explaining why the email was blocked. If you still need to send .js files for legitimate reasons, you can use Google Drive, Google Cloud Storage, or other storage solutions to share or send your files."

You can still send JavaScript files using Gmail if you change the extension. What about downloading old .js attachments? Try the workarounds from this post.
